Signs you need treatment

Signs of outdoor wood cockroach activity

Large cockroaches around the exterior
Dark brown, larger cockroaches seen on exterior walls, paths, in the garden, or near woodpiles — typically more active at night.
Cockroaches entering from outside
Occasional cockroaches found inside the property — particularly near exterior doors, ground-floor entry points, or after rain.
Activity around garden beds or mulch
Wood cockroach activity in garden beds, under mulch, in leaf litter, or around compost and organic material.
Presence near woodpiles or decking
Cockroaches found under decking, in woodpiles, under timber stored against the property, or in other sheltered outdoor areas.
Seasonal increase in activity
A noticeable increase in cockroach activity in spring and summer as temperatures rise and outdoor populations become more active.
Previous German cockroach treatment not effective
If a previous German cockroach treatment has not resolved the issue, the cockroaches may be wood cockroaches entering from outside — requiring perimeter treatment rather than an indoor approach.
Treatment overview

How outdoor wood cockroach treatment works

Wood cockroach treatment focuses on the exterior perimeter and garden areas where the population is established. A residual insecticide is applied to the perimeter, garden beds, paths, and other areas where activity is concentrated. Where cockroaches are entering the property, treatment also targets the entry points.

01
Identify the source and activity areas
We assess where the outdoor population is concentrated — garden beds, woodpiles, decking, and exterior paths — and identify any entry points into the property.
02
Perimeter treatment
Residual insecticide applied to the property perimeter, garden areas, and surfaces where cockroach activity is concentrated.
03
Entry point treatment
Where cockroaches are entering the property, treatment is applied to exterior entry points and the adjacent interior areas.
04
Aftercare and sanitation advice
We advise on environmental measures — woodpile placement, mulch management, lighting — that can reduce ongoing population pressure.

What affects the price
  • Property size and extent of outdoor area to be treated
  • Level of activity and population pressure
  • Whether entry-point or interior treatment is also needed
  • Whether treatment is standalone or combined with other services
Before treatment

Before we arrive

  • Move woodpiles, pot plants, and stored items away from the property perimeter where practical
  • Let us know which outdoor areas are showing the most activity
  • Ensure outdoor access to the main treatment areas — paths, garden beds, and perimeter — is clear
After treatment

What to expect afterwards

  • Allow treated surfaces to dry before allowing pets and children back into treated areas
  • Avoid watering treated garden beds for at least 48 hours where possible
  • Some cockroach activity may continue in the first 2 weeks as remaining population contacts treated surfaces
  • Get in touch if activity remains high after 3 weeks and we'll advise on next steps

Reducing organic material and moisture around the perimeter supports treatment effectiveness over time.

Common questions

Outdoor wood cockroach treatment — questions we're often asked

Wood cockroaches are larger (25–35mm), darker brown, and predominantly outdoor insects. German cockroaches are smaller (10–15mm), lighter brown, and almost exclusively found indoors near warmth and food sources. If you're unsure, describe what you're seeing when you get in touch and we'll help identify the species.
Yes — wood cockroaches can enter properties through gaps around doors, vents, pipes, and other entry points, particularly at night or after heavy rain. However, they do not establish indoor colonies in the way German cockroaches do.
For wood cockroaches, perimeter treatment is usually the primary approach. Where cockroaches are actively entering the property, treatment at the entry points may also be recommended.
Most residual perimeter treatments provide several weeks to months of protection. Effectiveness can be reduced by heavy rain on exposed surfaces. Annual or bi-annual treatment is common for properties with ongoing pressure.
Only if both species are present. If the cockroaches you're seeing are exclusively outdoor wood cockroaches, perimeter treatment is the appropriate response.
